Yard drainage, rainwater diversion and lawn irrigation

Yard drainage comes up when puddles sit for weeks after rain and water seeps into the basement; sprinklers, when the lawn and flower beds burn out in summer. Describe your yard and soil in an order, and contractors will send responses. Or compare their prices, work photos and client reviews.

How much drainage and a lawn sprinkler system cost

What affects the price

  • Trench length and depth

Drainage is most often priced per linear meter. Depth depends on the job: a lawn needs a shallower trench, while foundation drainage usually goes at footing level or below.

  • Where the water goes

It is simplest when water flows by gravity into a ditch or a lower part of the yard. If there is nowhere to discharge it, you will need a collection well and a drainage pump.

  • Soil and groundwater

A trench takes longer to dig in dense clay than in sand, and when groundwater sits high, water often has to be pumped out of the trench while the work is going on.

  • Irrigation zones

A lawn, flower beds and a greenhouse are watered differently: by sprinklers or drip line, and each such zone needs its own valve and a separate pipe.

  • A finished lawn and paths

Irrigation and drainage pipes are easier to lay before the lawn is sown and the paths are paved than to cut through finished turf later and restore it.

How to choose a drainage and irrigation contractor

  1. 1

    Where the water comes from

Ask how the contractor will tell where the water comes from — the roof and higher ground or the soil: that decides whether you need deep drainage or surface channels.

  2. 2

    Slope and inspection wells

Ask what slope the drain pipe will be laid at and whether there will be inspection wells at the turns: through them the pipe is flushed when it silts up.

  3. 3

    Trenches in the photos

Look in the portfolio for photos of trenches before backfilling: in clay soil the pipe and gravel are usually wrapped in geotextile, otherwise the drain silts up faster.

  4. 4

    The sprinkler layout

Ask for a layout: where the sprinklers will stand, how their circles will overlap so no dry patches are left, and whether the house wall and paths will get wet.

  5. 5

    Winterizing

Ask whether the contractor drains the system or blows it out with a compressor in the fall and restarts it in spring — and whether that is in the installation cost.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What you need: yard or foundation drainage, rainwater diversion, a sprinkler system or drip irrigation

  • Where and when water collects: puddles after rain, a flooded basement or a damp foundation wall

  • The yard's area in sotkas or square meters, its slope and soil, if you know them: clay, sand or black soil

  • Where the water can be drained to: a ditch, a storm sewer or a lower part of the yard

  • For irrigation: what to water and where the water comes from — the mains, a well or a tank

  • Whether there is already a lawn, paths and plantings, whether machinery can get in, and when you would like to start
