Carpenter and joiner — carpentry and wooden structures

Carpentry means restoring old wooden windows that no longer close properly, a new floor on joists instead of a creaky one, or wood paneling in an attic. You can choose a carpenter or joiner yourself — by work photos, prices and client reviews — or describe the job in an order and get responses.

Carpenters and joiners

How much carpentry costs

What affects the price

  • Wood species and drying

Pine, spruce, oak and ash differ in price and are worked differently, and kiln-dried timber costs more than green wood but warps and cracks less.

  • Condition of the old wood

A window or door with several coats of old paint, rot at the bottom of the frame or loose mortise-and-tenon joints takes more work than simply sanding and varnishing.

  • On site or in the workshop

Parts are often made on machines in a workshop, and sashes and door leaves are taken there for restoration, so removal and delivery may be charged separately.

  • Area and base

Floors on joists and tongue-and-groove paneling are usually priced per square meter, while leveling joists on an uneven base or a frame for the paneling costs extra.

  • Finish and hardware

Oil, wax, varnish or several coats of paint, new hinges, handles and window seals may be included in the cost or paid for separately.

How to choose a carpenter

  1. 1

    Finish or framing carpenter

Window restoration and fine finishing are finish carpentry; rafters, joists and frames are framing work. Look for your exact job in the services and similar work in the portfolio.

  2. 2

    Which wood and how dry

Ask what wood the carpenter will use and how it was dried: gaps appear between boards of damp timber over time, and a new sash may stop closing tightly.

  3. 3

    Protection from damp and rot

For rafters, joists and anything resting on concrete or near moisture, ask what the wood will be treated with and how the joists will be separated from the screed.

  4. 4

    Inspection and a breakdown

Rot under paint does not show right away, so the exact cost of a restoration is usually given after an inspection. Ask for removal, repair, finish and installation to be listed separately.

  5. 5

Joints and gaps in the portfolio

Look at the photos of work up close: how the corners of casings and paneling are fitted, whether the gaps between sash and frame are even, whether the floorboards have gaps.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What needs doing: restoring, repairing, replacing or making something new

  • What exactly: windows, doors, a floor, rafters or paneling — number, sizes or area

  • The current condition: old paint, rot, creaking, gaps, loose joints

  • What wood and finish you want, and whether the material is already bought

  • The site: an apartment, a private house, an attic or a balcony

  • Whether sashes or doors can be taken to a workshop or everything must be done on site
