Masons and paver installers

How much bricklaying and paver installation cost

What affects the price

  • Material and block size

Bricks are laid one by one on mortar, large aerated blocks on adhesive and much faster, so the price per square meter of wall varies noticeably.

  • Facing or common brickwork

Facing brickwork with pointing needs even joints and a clean face, so it costs more than common brickwork that will be plastered.

  • Height and scaffolding

Masonry above head height needs scaffolding, and renting, erecting and moving it are often paid for separately.

  • Base and curbs

Before pavers go down, the soil is dug out, crushed stone and sand are spread and compacted with a plate compactor, and curbs are set — this work is often charged separately from the laying.

  • Pattern and cutting

A complex pattern, curved paths and cutting around walls, manholes and steps take more time than laying rectangular pavers in straight rows.

How to choose a mason or paver installer

  1. 1

    Work with your material

Facing brick, aerated block and granite pavers call for different skills. Look for your exact material in the portfolio and check in the photos whether the joints are even.

  2. 2

    What the price is for

Masonry is priced per piece, per square meter or per cubic meter. Ask which unit the mason uses and whether the price includes bringing up materials, mortar and scaffolding.

  3. 3

    Reinforcement and lintels

Ask how the mason will reinforce aerated block masonry and what they will use to span the window and door openings.

  4. 4

    Layers under the pavers

Ask for a description of the base layers and the slope for water runoff: they decide whether the path will sink and whether puddles will stand on it.

  5. 5

    A sample panel

For facing brickwork, agree on a small sample panel first, so you see the mortar color and the joint shape before the whole wall is laid.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What needs doing: walls, partitions, cladding, a plinth or a paved path

  • The material — brick, aerated block, stone or pavers — and whether it is already bought

  • Approximate scope: area and height of the walls, or the area to be paved

  • Whether there is a design or a drawing with dimensions and window and door openings

  • What is under the future paving: soil or an old concrete base — and whether cars will drive on it

  • Whether a truck with materials can drive up and whether there is room to store them
