Stretch and suspended ceilings — installation, lighting, repair

A stretch ceiling with a shadow gap in a new build, a suspended drywall or drop-tile ceiling in an office — or a membrane sagging after a flood from upstairs. Pick an installer by work photos, prices and client reviews and send them a request — or describe the job in an order and compare responses.

Stretch and suspended ceiling installers

How much a stretch ceiling costs

What affects the price

  • Membrane and finish

A fabric membrane usually costs more than PVC film, and a matte, satin or gloss finish, a color or a print also change the price per square meter.

  • Perimeter profile

A shadow-gap or floating profile with lighting is often charged separately per meter of perimeter, so a long narrow room takes more profile than its area suggests.

  • Lights and cut-arounds

Mounts for recessed lights, a chandelier or a track system, going around heating pipes and every extra corner in an odd-shaped room are usually priced per piece.

  • Levels and niches

A two-level drywall ceiling, a niche with a hidden curtain track or a cove for an LED strip take more framing and time than a flat plane.

  • Removing the old ceiling

An old suspended ceiling or tiles coming away from the base are taken down first, and removal and hauling the debris are often paid for separately.

How to choose a stretch ceiling installer

  1. 1

    Measuring and the breakdown

The exact price is usually given after measuring. Ask for a breakdown showing the membrane area, meters of profile and each light mount, and check whether measuring is paid.

  2. 2

    Lighting before installation

Plan the lights before the membrane goes up: mounts and wiring go in beforehand. Ask who will run the cable — the installer or an electrician.

  3. 3

    The membrane for your room

A PVC membrane is stretched with a heat gun and usually holds water after a leak; fabric goes up without heating but will not hold water. Ask which one the installer recommends.

  4. 4

    Where the seam goes

If the room is wider than the roll, there will be a seam or a dividing profile. Ask where it will run, and check the portfolio for how the installer handles seams and wall joints.

  5. 5

    Warranty and draining water

Ask what warranty the installer gives on the membrane and the installation, and whether they will come to drain water if the neighbors upstairs flood you.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Which ceiling you need: stretch, drywall, drop-tile, open-cell or slat

  • Which rooms, and the approximate area and ceiling height of each

  • Membrane and profile, if already chosen: matte or gloss, shadow gap, lighting

  • Which lights and how many: recessed, chandelier, track, light lines

  • What is on the ceiling now: concrete, old whitewash, tiles or a suspended ceiling to remove

  • What stage the renovation is at, and whether there is furniture in the rooms
