Ventilation installation — supply and exhaust systems and recuperators

Fogged-up windows, mold in the bathroom corners, a stuffy bedroom in the morning — typical reasons to have ventilation installed. Describe your rooms in an order, and installers will send responses. Or choose one yourself — by photos of installed systems, service prices and client reviews.

How much ventilation installation costs

What affects the price

  • System type

A recuperator for one room means one hole in the wall, while a central supply and exhaust unit needs a network of ducts to every room.

  • Holes in the walls

Through-holes are cut with a diamond core drill, so the price of each depends on the wall material and thickness: concrete, brick or insulated aerated block.

  • Duct routing

Ducts are hidden above a suspended ceiling, in boxed-in enclosures or in the attic; if the attic is cold, they are also insulated so condensation does not form.

  • Renovation stage

Ventilation is easiest to install before the finish work. Once the renovation is done, ducts have to be hidden in boxed-in enclosures, or you make do with recuperators in individual rooms.

  • Work at height

If the outer grille has to be fitted from the facade on an upper floor, an industrial climber or a truck-mounted aerial lift may be needed — this is usually charged separately.

How to choose a ventilation installer

  1. 1

    Airflow calculation

Ask to see the calculation: how much air the system will supply to each habitable room and how much it will extract from the kitchen, bathroom and toilet.

  2. 2

    Noise and unit location

Ask where the unit will sit — under the hallway ceiling, in the attic or in a utility room — and how loud it will run in night mode.

  3. 3

    Filter maintenance

The filters will need regular cleaning or replacing. Check how to reach them, whether the unit will have an access hatch and how often they need replacing in your model.

  4. 4

    A hole in the facade

In an apartment building, find out in advance from the OSBB (condominium association) or the building manager whether the outer wall may be drilled and a grille fitted on the facade.

  5. 5

    Setup after start-up

Agree that after the installation they will measure and adjust the airflow in each room and show you how to switch modes.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Apartment, house or commercial space, the floor area and number of rooms

  • What you need: a whole-home system, a recuperator for one room, a bathroom fan or basement ventilation

  • Renovation stage: bare walls or a finished interior that must be preserved

  • Material and thickness of the outer walls, and where ducts can run: above a suspended ceiling, in the attic, in boxed-in enclosures

  • Whether there is a ventilation design, or the system has to be calculated from scratch

  • Whether the equipment is already bought — make and model of the recuperator or unit
