Laser metal cutting, bending and custom metalworking

Laser metal cutting helps when you need brackets, flanges, an equipment enclosure or a batch of identical parts made to a drawing. Describe the metal, sizes and quantity in an order, and metalworkers will send responses. Or choose a shop yourself by photos of parts and client reviews.

How much laser metal cutting costs

What affects the price

  • Cut length and holes

Cutting is often charged per meter of contour plus each pierce of the sheet, so a plate with a dozen holes costs more than a plain blank of the same size.

  • Metal and sheet thickness

Stainless steel, aluminum and brass are cut in a different mode than mild steel, and the thicker the sheet, the slower the cut and the higher the price per meter of cut.

  • Number of bends

Bending is usually charged per bend. A long part or thick sheet needs a more powerful press brake, and a box with complex bends takes longer to set up.

  • Drawing or sketch

With a ready DXF drawing, cutting can start right away, while a drawing or flat pattern made from a sketch or sample is separate work that can raise the cost.

  • The shop's metal and nesting

If the shop buys the metal, it often charges for the parts plus the share of the sheet left as offcuts; nesting several parts tightly on one sheet reduces that share.

How to choose who cuts and bends your metal

  1. 1

    Laser or plasma

A laser cuts thin and medium sheet precisely and cleanly; plasma handles thick metal faster, but leaves a rougher edge. Ask what machine will cut your part.

  2. 2

    Sizes the machine takes

Ask about the largest sheet the laser bed holds and the longest part the press brake can bend: this decides whether your part is made in one piece, without a joint.

  3. 3

    Flat pattern for bending

Ask who makes the flat pattern: it has to allow for the sheet thickness and bend radius, or after bending the part will not match the drawing.

  4. 4

    Similar parts in the portfolio

In the portfolio, look for parts like yours: a bent box, a perforated panel, flanges with holes. Close-up shots show the cut edge and how even the bends are.

  5. 5

    Precision and critical dimensions

Ask what tolerances the machines hold when cutting and bending, and point out which dimensions are critical for you — for example, the spacing between mounting holes.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What you need: cutting, bending, rolling or all of it — and what the part is for

  • The metal and sheet thickness: mild or stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized sheet

  • Part dimensions and the number of pieces

  • Whether there is a drawing in DXF or another format, or only a sketch with dimensions

  • Whose metal: yours, or the shop should buy it

  • Whether the edges need deburring, and how you will collect the finished parts
