Garden care — tree pruning, lawn mowing and grass cutting

Garden care depends on the season: pruning and spraying trees in spring, cutting grass in summer, clearing leaves in fall. Post an order for one visit or for the whole season — gardeners will send responses. Or look at photos of pruned trees in portfolios and choose a gardener yourself.

How much garden care costs

What affects the price

  • Area and grass height

Grass cutting is often priced per sotka (a hundred square meters), and waist-high weeds or wet, dense grass take longer to cut than a lawn mowed every week.

  • Tree height and condition

A young apple tree is pruned from the ground, while an old neglected orchard or a tall walnut needs a ladder, a pole pruner or work at height.

  • Garden spraying

Spraying is priced per tree or per sotka, and the price depends on the product. An orchard is usually sprayed more than once a season.

  • Branches, leaves and stumps

Chipping branches, hauling away cut grass and leaves, or removing a stump after felling are often charged separately.

  • One-off or for the season

Clearing a neglected yard in one visit and looking after a garden on a schedule all season are different jobs, and they are usually priced differently.

How to choose a gardener

  1. 1

Pruning is a skill of its own

Many people can cut grass, but few can shape the crown of an apple or pear tree. Look in the portfolio for before-and-after photos of pruning, and ask about experience with neglected orchards.

  2. 2

    When to prune

Ask when the gardener recommends pruning your plants: fruit trees, arborvitae, roses and hydrangeas each have their own timing, and pruning at the wrong time can leave a shrub without flowers.

  3. 3

    Products and spraying time

Ask which products will be used to spray the garden and when: spraying during flowering is dangerous for bees, and vegetables and herbs may be growing nearby.

  4. 4

    The gardener's equipment

Ask whether the gardener has their own string trimmer, mower and pole pruner or will use your equipment — and who will pay for the fuel.

  5. 5

    Felling near the house

If a tree grows next to the house or wires, ask how it will be taken down in sections and who will cover the damage if a branch falls on the roof or a car.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What work is needed: grass cutting, pruning, arborvitae trimming, spraying or leaf cleanup

  • The yard's area and how long ago the grass was last cut

  • How many trees and shrubs, which ones and how tall

  • Whether there is vehicle access to the yard, and water and power for tools

  • What to do with branches, grass and leaves: chip them, leave them for compost or haul them away

  • A one-off visit or regular care — and how often
