Custom clothing and textile sewing, machine embroidery

Custom clothing means a prom dress, a vyshyvanka or a stage costume — and also curtains, bed linen and machine-embroidered patches. Describe the style and fabric in an order — seamstresses and tailors will send responses. Or find similar items in portfolios and send their maker a request.

How much custom sewing costs

What affects the price

  • How complex the design is

A lining, set-in sleeves, a zipper or a vent and several fittings make a suit take longer and cost more to sew than an elastic-waist skirt.

  • Fabric and notions

Chiffon, silk and jersey are harder to sew than cotton. You can buy the fabric and notions yourself or leave that to the specialist — then the materials are added to the cost of the work.

  • Curtains — per meter of stitching

Curtain sewing is often charged per meter of stitching, so the cost depends on the width and drop, how dense the pleats are and the type of curtain tape.

  • Stitches and the embroidery file

Machine embroidery is charged by stitch count and size, and preparing the design for the embroidery machine — digitizing — is often paid for separately, once.

  • One item or a batch

In a batch of identical items the price per piece is usually lower than for a single one: the pattern is made and the machine set up for the whole batch.

How to choose a seamstress or tailor

  1. 1

    Items like yours

Look in the portfolio for the kind of item you need: someone who sews evening dresses does not necessarily sew curtains or uniforms. In the photos, take a close look at the seams and edge finishing.

  2. 2

    Measurements and fittings

Ask who takes the measurements, how many fittings there will be and where: in the studio or at your place. For curtains, ask whether someone will come to measure the window and the rail.

  3. 3

    Before you buy fabric

Ask the specialist how much fabric to buy given the bolt width and the print, and also whether it needs pre-shrinking so the finished item does not shrink in the wash.

  4. 4

    Adjustments in the cost

Agree in advance whether adjustments after the last fitting are included in the cost, and how long the whole job will take.

  5. 5

    An embroidery sample

Before a batch, ask for a sample stitched on the same fabric: it shows whether the embroidery puckers the fabric and whether small letters are legible.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What to sew and how many items — for an adult or for a child

  • The style in words: silhouette, length, sleeves, fastening — or the pattern name

  • The clothing size, or for curtains the window width and the drop from rail to floor

  • Whether you already have the fabric and notions, or they need choosing and buying

  • For embroidery: the logo size, the number of colors and what to embroider it on

  • When you need the finished item and where it is convenient for you to try it on
