Washing machine, fridge and other appliance repair

How much appliance repair costs

What affects the price

  • How complex the fault is

Replacing a pump or a seal is simpler than repairing a control board or a compressor.

  • Spare parts

Original and compatible parts differ in price, and for rare models they have to be ordered.

  • Diagnostics

Some technicians charge for diagnostics separately, others do not charge for it if you go ahead with the repair.

  • At home or in a workshop

A complex fault is sometimes easier to fix in a workshop, and then transporting the appliance is added to the price.

  • Built-in appliances

To get to a built-in dishwasher or oven, it has to be taken out of the cabinetry, which takes extra time.

How to choose an appliance repair technician

  1. 1

    Experience with your appliance

Fridges and washing machines are different specialties. Look for a technician who lists your type of appliance in their services — ideally your brand too.

  2. 2

    The price before the repair

Agree that after diagnostics the technician will name an exact price, and the repair will start only with your consent.

  3. 3

    Warranty on the repair

Ask how long the technician's warranty lasts — both on the work and on the installed parts.

  4. 4

    Whether it is worth repairing

For an old appliance, ask them to compare the cost of the repair with the price of a new one — sometimes a repair makes no sense.

  5. 5

    Manufacturer's warranty

If the appliance is still under the manufacturer's warranty, go to the service center first: after a third-party repair the warranty may not be honored.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Type of appliance, make and model — from the label on the body or inside the door

  • What happened: noise, a leak, it won't switch on, an error code on the display

  • How old the appliance is, and whether it is still under warranty

  • Whether the appliance is built into the cabinetry

  • Whether you are ready to hand it over to a workshop if it cannot be repaired at home
