Packing belongings for a move — dishes, furniture and appliances

Packing for a move: dishes, books and clothes go into boxes, and furniture, mirrors and appliances are wrapped in film before the truck arrives. In an order, list what to pack and what is fragile, and packers will send responses. Or choose packers yourself by photos of packed items in portfolios.

How much packing for a move costs

What affects the price

  • Contents, not rooms

It is less the number of rooms than what is in them: a closet of clothes is packed quickly, while a china cabinet of crystal or a home library takes hours.

  • Packing materials

Boxes, stretch film, bubble wrap, paper and tape may be included in the price or charged separately, by how much is used.

  • Fragile and bulky items

Dishes and glass are wrapped piece by piece, and a large mirror or a TV without its factory box sometimes gets a rigid case or a wooden crate.

  • Unpacking at the new place

If your things need not only packing but also putting away in closets and kitchen drawers in the new home, that takes extra time.

  • Time frame and team size

An apartment that has to be packed in one day before the truck arrives takes several people at once; with a few days to spare a smaller team will manage.

How to choose packers

  1. 1

    How they pack fragile items

Ask what they wrap dishes, mirrors and appliances in: stretch film protects from dust and scratches, but not from impact. Ask to see photos of packed items in their portfolio.

  2. 2

    Box labels and an inventory

Agree that every box will be marked with the room and contents, fragile ones with “fragile”, and that the boxes will be numbered and listed. That makes it easier to notice if one is missing.

  3. 3

    What you pack yourself

Documents, money, jewelry and your laptop are better packed by you and carried with you. Show the packers which closets and drawers not to touch.

  4. 4

    Packing before the truck arrives

If you book the truck and movers separately, tell the packers when the truck will arrive: movers often count waiting time as working time.

  5. 5

    If something breaks

Agree in advance who is responsible for things damaged inside a box, especially when one specialist packs and another transports. Photos of valuables taken before packing will help here.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • How many rooms and what is in them: closets of clothes, kitchen, books, appliances

  • Fragile and large items: dishes, mirrors, paintings, a TV without its box

  • Whether you need the specialist's materials: boxes, film, paper

  • Whether your things need unpacking and putting away at the new place

  • How much time there is for packing before the truck arrives
