Smart home installation in apartments and houses

A smart home is tailored to your habits: lights come on with a motion sensor, the boiler heats on a schedule, and a leak shuts off the water by itself. In an order, list what to automate and which devices you have, and installers will send responses. Or choose an installer who knows your platform.

How much smart home installation costs

What affects the price

  • Number of devices

Every switch, relay and sensor has to be mounted, added to the app and tested, so the price depends on how many there are and in how many rooms.

  • Neutral wire

Many smart switches need a neutral wire in the wall box. If there is none, you choose a no-neutral model or run a new wire, which is an electrician's job.

  • Wi-Fi, Zigbee or wired

Wi-Fi devices work through the router, Zigbee ones through a hub, and a wired system such as KNX is laid during renovation and takes longer to set up.

  • Relays in the electrical panel

DIN-rail relays go into the electrical panel, and if there is no room left, the panel has to be extended or replaced.

  • Automation scenarios

Adding devices to an app is one thing; planning and setting up scenarios, such as lights on a motion sensor or shutting off the water after a leak, is separate work.

How to choose a smart home installer

  1. 1

    Your platform

Tuya, Xiaomi, Apple Home, Home Assistant and KNX are set up differently, and devices from different platforms don't always work together. Look for an installer who has already built a system on yours.

  2. 2

    Working without internet

Ask which scenarios will run locally if the internet or the manufacturer's cloud service goes down, and which will stop without them.

  3. 3

    After a power outage

Ask what state the devices will be in when the power comes back, and whether the router and the hub should be plugged into a UPS.

  4. 4

    Access stays with you

The devices should sit in your account in the app or on your own server. Agree that once the work is done, all access and admin rights will be yours alone.

  5. 5

    A diagram after installation

Ask for a diagram showing which relay controls which circuit, and short instructions on how to change a scenario yourself.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What you want to automate: lighting, heating, curtains, leak protection

  • Type of home: an apartment or a house, how many rooms and floors

  • Whether renovation is still going on, or the walls are already finished

  • Which devices you already have — make, model and the app they work in

  • Whether the wall boxes have a neutral wire and the panel has free space, if you know

  • Whether the system should work without internet and during power outages
