Upholstered furniture reupholstery — sofas, armchairs, chairs

Furniture reupholstery rescues a worn sofa, an armchair the cat has scratched or chairs with sagging seats. Describe the piece, its mechanism and the fabric you want in an order — upholsterers will send responses. Or find pieces like yours in portfolios and send that upholsterer a request.

How much it costs to reupholster a sofa

What affects the price

  • Size and construction

A corner sofa with separate cushions takes more fabric and time than a straight one, and button tufting or piping along the seams adds work.

  • Fabric and how much it takes

Basketweave, velour, chenille, “anti-claw” fabric or faux leather differ in price per meter, and stripes or a large pattern need extra fabric so the design lines up at the seams.

  • Filling and springs

Changing only the upholstery is one thing; replacing sagging foam, a spring unit or zigzag springs means separate materials and work.

  • Frame and mechanism

A cracked frame rail, wobbly legs or a broken fold-out mechanism — eurobook, dolphin, accordion — are fixed before reupholstering, and that adds to the cost.

  • Pickup and return

Sofas are usually reupholstered in a workshop, so transport both ways and carrying up stairs without an elevator may be added to the cost.

How to choose an upholsterer

  1. 1

    Similar work in the portfolio

An antique armchair with carved arms is reupholstered differently from an office chair: the frame and the decoration are kept. Look for furniture like yours in the portfolio, ideally with before and after photos.

  2. 2

    Fabric samples in person

Fabric color and texture look different on a screen. Ask to see samples or a catalog, and check whether you can bring your own fabric.

  3. 3

    Fabric for your household

For a sofa that gets sat on every day, ask about abrasion resistance on the Martindale test, and if you have a cat or a dog, about “anti-claw” fabric.

  4. 4

    What goes inside

Ask what foam and what density the upholsterer will put in the seat: it determines how soon the seat will sag again.

  5. 5

    Cost breakdown and timing

Ask for the cost to be broken down — fabric, filling, frame repair, labor and transport — and how many days the furniture will stay in the workshop.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What furniture and how many pieces: a straight or corner sofa, armchairs, chairs, a bed or a kitchen corner bench

  • Approximate dimensions and whether the seat and back cushions are removable

  • What is wrong: worn upholstery, sagging foam, creaking springs or a broken mechanism

  • The fold-out mechanism type, if the sofa unfolds: eurobook, dolphin, accordion

  • What fabric you want — basketweave, velour, faux leather — or whether you already have your own

  • Whether the furniture can be taken to a workshop, which floor it is on and whether there is an elevator
