Horseback riding lessons with an instructor — lunge, arena and trail rides

Riding lessons suit first-timers getting on a horse, kids, and riders preparing for show jumping or dressage events. Say in an order whether you already trot and have your own horse, and instructors will respond. Or send a request to an instructor you pick by client reviews.

How much a riding lesson costs

What affects the price

  • A stable horse or your own

If you ride a stable horse, its hire is included in the price, while on your own horse you usually pay only for the trainer's time.

  • Lunge, arena or trail ride

A lunge lesson, riding on your own in the arena under the instructor's eye and a trail ride through fields or forest are different services at different prices.

  • Private or in a group

In a private lesson the instructor watches only you, while a place in a group of several riders usually costs less.

  • Length and lesson packages

Half an hour and an hour in the saddle are priced differently, and a package of several lessons is usually better value than single ones.

  • Competition training

Show jumping or dressage training, preparing for competitions and support at shows usually cost more than leisure riding.

Prices come from specialists' profiles on Nexperity and update automatically. You agree the final price with the specialist directly.

How to choose a riding instructor

  1. 1

A calm horse for a beginner

Ask which horse you or your child will be given: a beginner needs a calm, well-schooled horse, not a young or hot-blooded sport horse.

  2. 2

    Helmet and footwear

Ride only in a riding helmet and check whether the stable has one in your size. Wear closed shoes with a small heel so your foot cannot slip through the stirrup.

  3. 3

    How the first lessons go

Ask whether you will start with lunge lessons, with the instructor controlling the horse, and whether they will first show you how to approach and saddle a horse safely.

  4. 4

    Age, weight and health

Check from what age the instructor takes children and whether there is a rider weight limit. Tell the instructor about injuries or pregnancy in advance, and if in doubt, consult a doctor.

  5. 5

    Arena and weather

Ask where lessons take place: in an indoor arena you can ride all year round, while lessons in an outdoor arena depend on rain and frost.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Who will ride: an adult or a child — and how old the child is

  • Experience: never been in the saddle, ride at a walk, or already trot and canter

  • What you are after: learning from scratch, trail rides, show jumping or dressage

  • Whether you will ride your own horse or need the instructor's horse

  • How far you are ready to travel to the stable and whether you need an indoor arena

  • Private or in a group, how many times a week and payment per lesson
