Rock climbing and bouldering with a coach — for kids and adults

People start rock climbing in different ways: with bouldering on low walls, a class for their child or a belay course to climb on a rope. Say in an order whether you can belay and have your own gear, and coaches will respond. Or send a request straight to a coach from your climbing gym.

How much climbing lessons cost

What affects the price

  • Entry and rental

Climbing gym entry and the rental of climbing shoes and a harness may be included in the lesson price or paid at the gym separately.

  • Bouldering or roped routes

In bouldering a coach can lead several students at once, while on a high roped wall each climber has to be belayed, so such groups are usually smaller.

  • Classes or private lessons

Kids' and adults' classes usually run on a monthly pass, while a private lesson, where the coach attends to you alone, has its own price.

  • Belay course

Belaying a partner is often taught in a separate course of several sessions — after it, a gym may allow you to climb with a partner without a coach.

  • Real rock instead of a gym

A trip to natural rock means travel, time on the routes and the coach's gear: ropes, quickdraws, helmets. It is usually charged per day, not per hour.

How to choose a climbing coach

  1. 1

    Bouldering or rope

Some coaches mostly teach bouldering, others roped climbing on high walls or kids' classes. Ask which of these the coach teaches most.

  2. 2

    How the coach belays

Ask who will belay you in the first sessions and whether the coach teaches you to check the knot and harness buckles before every climb — both yours and your partner's.

  3. 3

    Learning to fall

In bouldering a good coach teaches you from the first session to climb down safely and fall onto the mats properly, not just where to put your hands and feet.

  4. 4

    Fingers, elbows and shoulders

These take the most strain in climbing. Tell the coach about injuries in advance, and if in doubt, consult a doctor first.

  5. 5

    Trips outdoors

Ask how long the coach has been taking people to the rocks, whose gear you will use and what they will do if someone gets hurt on a route. Nexperity does not check coaches' sports ranks or certificates.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Who will climb: an adult or a child — and their age

  • Experience: never climbed, go bouldering, or can already belay

  • What you want: bouldering, roped routes, a belay course or an outdoor trip

  • Whether you have your own gear: climbing shoes, a harness, chalk

  • The district or climbing gym where you would like to train, and whether you are ready to travel to the rocks

  • Private or in a group, how many times a week, and payment per lesson or for a pass
