Photo retouching — editing portraits, photo shoots and product photos

People order photo retouching for one shot or a whole shoot: to fix the light, remove an extra person from the frame or prepare an old portrait for a headstone. In an order, say how many photos you have and what to do with them, and retouchers will respond. Or choose one by before-and-after shots.

How much photo retouching costs

What affects the price

  • Depth of retouching

A quick fix of light and color, skin retouching with frequency separation and artistic editing with compositing take very different amounts of time per shot.

  • Number of shots

The price is usually per photo, while a series from one shoot, edited in one style, is often priced as a package.

  • The source file

A RAW file gives more room for correction than a photo compressed by a messenger. A dark or blurry shot takes longer, and not every one can be saved.

  • Complex edits

Moving a person onto a new background, hair and all, removing someone from the shot, changing clothes or taking a portrait out of a group photo are jobs usually charged separately.

  • Requirements for the final file

A file for large-format printing, a layout for engraving on granite and photos for a marketplace with its own size and background rules are each prepared differently.

How to choose a retoucher

  1. 1

    Before and after

Ask to see pairs of photos before and after editing: a finished shot alone does not show how much the retoucher did.

  2. 2

    Natural skin

Zoom in on portfolio photos: after good retouching you can still see pores and skin texture, and the face stays recognizable.

  3. 3

    Experience with your genre

Portrait retouching, product photo editing and preparing a portrait for a headstone are different skills. Look for a retoucher whose portfolio has exactly your kind of work.

  4. 4

    Test photo and revisions

Ask whether you can start with one test shot and how many rounds of revisions are included in the price.

  5. 5

    Your photos in the portfolio

Agree whether the retoucher may show your shots in their portfolio. Also check the format and size of the finished files.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • How many photos to edit and what is in them: portraits, a photo shoot, products or an old photo

  • What to do: light and color, skin retouching, background replacement, removing extra objects

  • What source file you have: RAW, JPEG from a camera, a scan or a phone photo

  • What the photos are for: print, website, marketplace, social media or a headstone — and what size

  • Two or three examples of editing you like

  • When you need the finished files
