Digitizing videotapes and film, restoring old photos

Digitizing videotapes, movie film and negatives turns a family archive into files you can watch on a phone, and cracked or creased old photos can be restored. List the tapes, film or photos and their condition in an order, and specialists will respond. Or choose a specialist by their work samples.

Digitization and restoration specialists

How much videotape digitization costs

What affects the price

  • Tape or film format

A VHS tape plays on an ordinary VCR, while Hi8, MiniDV or 8 mm film need rare camcorders, projectors or scanners.

  • Size of the archive

Videotapes are often priced per tape or per hour of recording, movie film by the meter or minute, and photos and negatives per frame.

  • Condition of the media

A moldy or broken tape is cleaned and repaired first, and brittle film that smells of vinegar is scanned with extra care — all of it extra work.

  • Scan quality and processing

High scan resolution, removing dust and scratches, color correction and splitting a recording into separate scenes add to the work.

  • How much restoration a photo needs

Removing dust and small scratches is simpler than rebuilding a torn-off corner or a face on a crease. Colorizing a black-and-white photo is a separate job.

How to choose a digitization specialist

  1. 1

    Equipment for your format

Find out whether the specialist has working equipment for your tapes and how they digitize movie film: frame-by-frame scanning is sharper than filming a projection on a screen.

  2. 2

    A trial tape

Before handing over the whole archive, ask for one tape or reel to be digitized as a trial: you will see the picture quality, colors and sound.

  3. 3

    Before and after restoration

Ask to see pairs of photos before and after. Check whether the specialist works by hand: automatic AI “enhancement” can change people's facial features.

  4. 4

    What you will get

Ask about the file format and resolution, whether the recording will be split into clips, and how the result will be delivered: on a flash drive or as a link to cloud storage.

  5. 5

    Care of the originals

Agree on how the specialist will store your tapes and photos, when they will return the originals and whether they will delete their copies of the files afterwards.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What to digitize: videotapes, movie film, negatives, slides, photos or audio cassettes — and how many

  • The format, if you know it: VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, MiniDV, 8 mm or Super 8 film

  • Condition: mold, broken tape, faded colors, cracks or creases on photos

  • What result you need: files on a flash drive or in the cloud, cleaning, color correction, restoration

  • Whether you already have scans of the photos, or the originals need to be handed over in person or by mail

  • Payment and the preferred deadline — for example, if the recordings are needed for a family celebration
