Product photography for catalogs and online stores

Product photography determines how an item looks on a marketplace, in a catalog, on a website or a menu: on a white background, in a styled scene or on a model. Write in an order which items and how many shots you need, and product photographers will respond. Or compare their portfolios and prices.

How much product photography costs

What affects the price

  • Items and angles

The price is counted per shot, per item or per hour: several angles of one bag and one shot of each item in a large batch are different work.

  • Material and surface

Glass, glossy packaging, metal and jewelry reflect light, so they need more complex lighting and longer retouching than fabric or cardboard.

  • Background and styling

A white background for a marketplace is simpler than a scene with props, a chosen interior or a food stylist who prepares dishes for the shot.

  • Model or mannequin

A shoot on a model also means the model's fee, a makeup artist and more time than a mannequin shoot or a flat lay on a table.

  • Editing after the shoot

Cutting out the background, matching colors to the product and preparing files to the marketplace's requirements may be charged separately from the shoot.

How to choose a product photographer

  1. 1

    Similar items in the portfolio

Jewelry, clothing and food are shot differently. Look for items in the portfolio that are close to yours in size and material.

  2. 2

    Accurate color

Ask how the photographer matches the color of a shot to the real product: for clothing and cosmetics, the wrong shade can turn into returns.

  3. 3

    One series for a catalog

Ask to see a whole series for one store: in a catalog, every shot should be consistent in lighting, background and scale.

  4. 4

    Studio or on site

Check whether the photographer has their own studio or shoots at your place, and how the goods will be delivered to the shoot and back.

  5. 5

    Rights and files

Agree where the shots may be used — on a marketplace, a website, in ads — and in what size and format you will get the files.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Which items to shoot, how many of them and what size they are

  • Where the photos will go: a marketplace, a website, a catalog or social media — and their background and size requirements

  • How many shots per item: angles, details, packaging, what comes in the set

  • Background and style: white background, styled scene, on a model or on a mannequin

  • A few examples of photos or product listings whose style you like

  • How the goods will get to the shoot and when you need the finished files
