Car window tinting with film — side and rear windows, windshield

People think about car window tinting when the cabin bakes in the summer sun, the back seat needs hiding from passers-by or the old film has bubbled. List the windows and the film you want in an order — tinters will send responses. Or choose a tinter yourself: by work photos, prices and reviews.

How much car window tinting costs

What affects the price

  • Which windows, and how many

The price is usually per window or per set. The rear window and windshield cost more than the side ones: they are larger and more curved.

  • Type of film

Ordinary dyed film costs less than carbon, metallized or ceramic film, and heat-rejecting windshield film is priced as a separate line.

  • Body style and glass shape

A sedan, a wagon and a minivan have different numbers and sizes of windows, and on a curved rear window fitting the film takes time: it is shrunk to shape with a heat gun.

  • Removing old film

Removing old film and leftover adhesive is a separate job, and on a rear window with defroster lines it goes slowly: the lines are easy to damage.

  • Taking apart doors and trim

On some cars the seals, door panels or the third brake light come off for the job, and that time goes into the cost too.

How to choose a window tinter

  1. 1

    Which film exactly

Ask which film the tinter suggests: its type, maker and light transmission — and whether they will show you the labeled roll before the work.

  2. 2

    Limits for the front windows

Tinting of the windshield and front side windows is restricted. Ask which film may go on them, and ask for the light transmission to be measured with a tint meter: glass with film is darker than the film itself.

  3. 3

The rear window in one piece

Ask whether the tinter applies film to the rear window in one piece, shrinking it to the curve, or in strips that leave visible seams.

  4. 4

    A clean, enclosed bay

Ask where the film will be applied: dust under it stays as visible specks, so the job needs a clean room without drafts.

  5. 5

    Curing time and warranty

Ask how many days you should not roll the windows down after tinting and what the tinter will do if the film peels or bubbles.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Make, model, year and body style: sedan, hatchback, wagon, crossover or minivan

  • Which windows to tint: rear, rear or front side windows, windshield or a panoramic roof

  • Film type and the light transmission you want, if you have already chosen

  • Whether there is old film to remove and whether the rear window has a defroster

  • When it suits you to leave the car for tinting
