How much car stereo installation costs

What affects the price

  • Dash kit and adapters

Not every head unit fits the factory slot: many cars need an extra dash kit, a harness adapter for the factory connector and a CAN adapter for the steering wheel controls.

  • How many panels come off

Fitting speakers, running a cable to the trunk or connecting a camera means removing door cards and interior panels. The more that has to come apart, the longer the job takes.

  • Amplifier power

An amplifier and subwoofer need a separate fused power cable run from the battery. The cable's price depends on its gauge and length.

  • Door soundproofing

It is often charged per door, and the cost depends on whether only the outer metal skin is treated or the access holes are sealed as well.

  • Sound tuning

Tuning the processor or head unit — time delays, filters, equalizer — is often charged separately, especially in a system with several amplifiers.

How to choose a car audio installer

  1. 1

Clips and connectors of your model

Every car has its own panel clips, connectors and factory features to keep. Ask whether the installer has worked on your exact model.

  2. 2

    No cutting of factory wiring

Check whether the equipment will be connected through adapters into the factory connectors: then the original head unit can go back without repairing the wiring.

  3. 3

    A fuse near the battery

If you are adding an amplifier, ask where the power cable fuse will go: it is mounted as close to the battery as possible to protect the wiring.

  4. 4

    A check after installation

Ask to be shown that the head unit and amplifier switch off with the ignition and do not drain the battery while the car is parked.

  5. 5

Photos of work in the portfolio

Look not only at the finished dash, but at how the wiring is routed, how the speaker pods are made and how the subwoofer is secured in the trunk.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Make, model and year of the car

  • What is installed now: factory head unit, speakers, factory amplifier

  • What to install: a head unit, speakers, subwoofer, amplifier or camera

  • Whether the equipment is already bought or needs choosing — and which model, if any

  • Which factory features must keep working: steering wheel controls, camera, parking sensors

  • Whether door soundproofing is needed and when you can leave the car
