Auto glass repair and replacement — windshield, side and rear windows

Windshield replacement after a crack spread in the frost, a stone chip repair or a new side window instead of a broken one. To respond to an order, technicians need the car model, the glass options and the size of the damage. Or choose a technician yourself — by prices and client reviews.

How much windshield replacement costs

What affects the price

  • Glass options

Heating, a rain sensor, a driver-assistance camera, a head-up display or acoustic glass: for one car model these are different versions of the glass at different prices.

  • Original glass or aftermarket

Glass with the carmaker's logo is usually more expensive. Aftermarket glass from different factories varies in quality, so ask which maker's glass will be fitted.

  • Camera calibration

If a driver-assistance camera sits on the windshield, it is calibrated after the replacement. This is a separate job, and not every shop has the equipment for it.

  • Moldings, clips and adhesive

A new molding, mounting clips and polyurethane adhesive may be included in the cost of installation or appear on the bill as separate items.

  • Size of the chip or crack

Chip repair is usually charged per chip and crack repair by length. A crack that is too long can no longer be repaired: the glass has to be replaced.

How to choose an auto glass technician

  1. 1

How the glass will be matched

Ask whether the technician matches the glass by the VIN or by the marking in the corner of the old one: that way the new glass has the same options and mounts.

  2. 2

    When you can drive

Ask how many hours after installation you can get behind the wheel: the adhesive has to set, or the glass may shift or let water in.

  3. 3

The frame under the old glass

When the old glass comes out, ask to see the window frame: rust on it is better treated before installation than hidden under the new glass.

  4. 4

What to expect from chip repair

Repair should keep the chip from turning into a crack, but a mark usually stays visible. Ask the technician how your particular chip will look after the repair.

  5. 5

    Warranty on the installation

Ask whether the technician gives a warranty on the installation and what they will do if moisture appears in the cabin after rain or a molding whistles at speed.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Make, model, year and body type

  • Which glass is damaged — windshield, side or rear — and how: a chip, a crack or shattered

  • The size of the chip or length of the crack, and whether it is in the driver's line of sight

  • Glass options: heating, rain sensor, driver-assistance camera, head-up display

  • Whether you need original glass or aftermarket will do

  • Whether you will come to the shop or need a mobile service — then the district and where the car will stand: a garage, a parking lot or outdoors
