Computer car diagnostics and pre-purchase inspection

The Check Engine light is on, the transmission jerks when shifting or you are about to buy a used car — time for car diagnostics. Choose a diagnostic technician yourself by prices and client reviews, or describe the make, model and symptoms in an order and compare the responses.

How much car diagnostics costs

What affects the price

  • What exactly is checked

Reading fault codes with a scanner is a short job, while a full check of the suspension, engine and electronics with a test drive takes longer and costs more.

  • The make and its electronics

Some makes need a dealer or specialized scanner, and in a car with many control units more systems get checked.

  • Measurements and borescope

A camera inspection of the cylinders or a compression or fuel pressure test is usually charged separately from reading the codes.

  • Coming to the car

A check at the seller's place or a parking lot often costs more than one at a garage, and without a lift the suspension is harder to see.

  • Diagnostics toward the repair

Some shops count diagnostics toward the cost of the repair if the car stays with them. Ask about it in advance.

How to choose a diagnostic technician

  1. 1

    A scanner for your make

A universal scanner does not see every control unit. Ask what equipment the technician uses and whether it reads ABS, airbag and transmission fault codes on your car.

  2. 2

A fault code is not a diagnosis

A code shows where the system logged a fault, not which part to replace. Check that the technician will look for the cause, not just read and clear the codes.

  3. 3

    A report after the check

Ask for a written report or a printout with the fault codes and an explanation of what needs fixing now and what can wait.

  4. 4

    An independent pre-purchase check

For a used car inspection, choose the technician yourself, not the shop the seller recommends. Ask whether it includes a paint thickness reading, a borescope and a test drive.

  5. 5

    Diesel, hybrid or LPG

A diesel's fuel system, a hybrid's battery and LPG equipment each have their own checks and typical faults. Look for a technician who works with your type of engine.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Make, model, year, engine, transmission and mileage

  • What is wrong: a dashboard warning light, a sound, vibration or smell — and when exactly it appears

  • What diagnostics you need: computer, suspension, engine or a full pre-purchase inspection

  • What has already been repaired or checked and which fault codes were read, if you know

  • Whether the car runs: you can drive to a garage or need a technician to come out — and to which district

  • When you need the diagnostics: urgently or it can be scheduled
