Hair coloring — find a colorist for balayage or highlights

Hair coloring by a colorist: grown-out roots, a soft balayage or going from dark to blonde. A colorist needs to know where to start, so in an order describe your current color and what you dyed it with before, and colorists will send responses. Or compare their work and reviews yourself.

How much hair coloring costs

What affects the price

  • Length and amount of color

Colorists often price by hair length or by the amount of color and lightener used, in grams.

  • Coloring technique

A single-process color takes less time than balayage, shatush or AirTouch, where the colorist works through the hair section by section.

  • Your starting color

Going blonde from black or dark dyed hair is harder than from light brown: it often takes a color remover and lightening in several stages.

  • Hair protection and toning

Toning after lightening and products that protect the hair during the process may be included in the price or paid for separately.

  • Trim and styling

Some colorists include a trim, blow-dry and styling after coloring in the price, others charge for them separately.

How to choose a hair colorist

  1. 1

    Photos taken in daylight

Studio lighting and filters change the shade in a photo. Look in the portfolio for before-and-after shots taken in daylight, on hair similar to yours.

  2. 2

    Consultation before coloring

Before coloring, the colorist should ask what you have colored your hair with before and tell you whether the shade you want takes one visit or several.

  3. 3

    Skin sensitivity test

Hair color manufacturers advise checking how your skin reacts to the product two days before each coloring. Ask whether the colorist does this test.

  4. 4

    Color and lightener

Ask which products the colorist works with and whether they protect the hair during lightening, especially if it is already colored.

  5. 5

Reviews on how the color lasts

In client reviews, look for how the color looked a few weeks after coloring: whether it turned brassy or the tone washed out.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What you need: roots or full color, balayage, highlights or toning

  • Your hair now: length, thickness, natural color, whether there is gray

  • What you have colored it with before: permanent dye, henna or basma, lightening — and how long ago

  • The result you want: shade, technique or how much lighter the hair should get

  • Where it suits you better: at the colorist's place or at yours

  • Convenient days and payment
