Dog and puppy training — lessons with a dog trainer

Dog training is for a puppy learning its first commands and for an adult dog that pulls on the leash, doesn't come when called or lunges at other dogs. Describe what worries you in an order — dog trainers will send responses. Or compare lesson prices and client reviews yourself.

How much dog training costs

What affects the price

  • A lesson or a full course

Some dog trainers set a price per lesson, others for a course of several lessons, such as a basic obedience course or a puppy program.

  • Where the lessons take place

A trainer's visit to your home often costs more than a lesson at their training field, because travel is added; an online consultation is a separate format with its own price.

  • One-on-one or in a group

A group lesson at a training field usually costs less than an individual one, but the trainer gives each dog less attention.

  • Difficult behavior

Teaching a puppy its first commands is simpler than working with an adult dog that lunges at people or dogs: that work takes longer and needs more experience.

  • Support between lessons

Homework, answering questions by messenger and feedback on videos of your walks may be included in the course price or paid for separately.

Prices come from specialists' profiles on Nexperity and update automatically. You agree the final price with the specialist directly.

How to choose a dog trainer

  1. 1

    Experience with what you need

Teaching a puppy its first commands, working with aggression and protection training are different skills. Ask which dogs and problems the trainer has already worked with.

  2. 2

How the trainer works with the dog

Ask how the trainer motivates the dog — with treats, play or praise — and whether they use a prong collar or punishment. Choose an approach you are comfortable with.

  3. 3

Getting to know the dog first

It is a good sign when the trainer first watches how the dog behaves at home and on a walk, asks about its routine and only then suggests a lesson plan.

  4. 4

    The owner learns too

Skills are reinforced every day between lessons, so ask whether the trainer will teach you as well: how to give commands, when to reward and what to do on a walk.

  5. 5

    No one-week promises

Be wary of guarantees like “an obedient dog in a week”: the result depends on the dog, the task and how regularly you practice.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Breed and age of the dog, how long it has lived with you

  • What the dog can already do and whether it has trained with a dog trainer before

  • What you need: first commands, an obedience course or behavior correction

  • What worries you: pulling on the leash, barking, lunging at people or dogs, biting

  • Where you would like to train: at home, at a training field or online, one-on-one or in a group

  • How many times a week and on which days you can practice
