In-home pet care — find a pet sitter

A pet sitter visits your pets while you are on vacation or a business trip: feeds the cat, scoops the litter box, changes the parrot's water, cleans a cage, terrarium or aquarium. Who comes is up to you: pick a sitter by prices and reviews, or describe the visits in an order and wait for responses.

How much a pet sitter costs

What affects the price

  • Visits per day

One visit a day is often enough for a cat, while a dog or a puppy needs checking on more often. The price is usually per visit or per day.

  • Number and kinds of pets

Several cats, a parrot and an aquarium in one apartment need more time for feeding and cleaning than a single hamster.

  • Medication and special needs

Medication on a schedule set by a vet, care for an elderly animal or a complex feeding routine take more time and attention.

  • Aquarium size and type

A large or saltwater aquarium takes longer and is harder to maintain than a small freshwater one, and filter media are often paid for separately.

  • Travel and visit length

The sitter travels to you every time, so a long trip adds to the price of every visit, and a long visit with play and brushing costs more than a quick feed and litter box clean.

How to choose a pet sitter

  1. 1

    Not just cats and dogs

If you have a parrot, a turtle or a snake, ask whether the sitter has looked after such animals and what exactly they did: feeding, cleaning the cage, checking the terrarium lamp.

  2. 2

    Meeting before you leave

Invite the sitter to meet in advance: show where the food, the litter box and any medication are, hand over the keys and see how your pet reacts to them.

  3. 3

    If your pet falls ill

Agree on which vet clinic to go to, whom the sitter calls if the animal seems unwell, and who approves the expenses.

  4. 4

    The aquarium and its filter

Not every pet sitter maintains aquariums. Ask how they clean the filter: the sponge is usually rinsed in water from the tank, not under the tap, to keep the beneficial bacteria.

  5. 5

    Photos after every visit

Agree that you will get a photo or a short video after each visit: it shows that the pet has eaten and the litter box or cage is clean.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • Which pets and how many: species, breed, age

  • What to do during a visit: feed, change the water, clean the litter box, cage or terrarium

  • How many visits a day and for how many days care is needed

  • Special food or medication prescribed by a vet, if needed

  • For an aquarium: its volume, freshwater or saltwater, a water change or a full clean

  • Whether the pet hides from strangers and lets people handle it
