Custom motion design and animation — find a motion designer

People order motion design when graphics need to move: an animated logo for a YouTube channel, a social media ad or a video that explains your service in a minute. Describe the task in an order — motion designers will send responses. Or pick one whose portfolio frames and storyboards you like.

How much an animated video costs

What affects the price

  • Video length

Animation is often priced per second of finished video: a short clip for Stories and an explainer several minutes long are very different amounts of work.

  • Animation technique

Kinetic typography and flat infographics are simpler than character animation, while frame-by-frame animation and 3D scenes take the most work.

  • New or ready-made graphics

If characters, icons and backgrounds have to be drawn first, that is a separate stage; with vector files and a brand book ready, there is less work.

  • Script and storyboard

A script, a storyboard and an animatic — a rough version of the video with timing — are often charged separately from the animation itself.

  • Voice-over and music

A narrator, licensed music and sound effects are usually paid for separately, and animating to a finished voice-over needs precise syncing.

How to choose a motion designer

  1. 1

A showreel is just a shop window

A showreel gathers the flashiest seconds from different projects. Ask for a full video similar to yours, judge its pacing and transitions, and check whether a viewer has time to read the text.

  2. 2

    Their part in team videos

Several people work on a studio video. Ask what exactly this designer did in the work shown: the characters, the animation or just the titles.

  3. 3

    Approval stage by stage

Agree to approve the script and storyboard first, before the animation starts: fixing an animatic is easier than reworking finished scenes.

  4. 4

    Formats for your platforms

Check whether you will get a horizontal version for YouTube and a vertical one for Reels, a logo on a transparent background or a Lottie file for your website.

  5. 5

    Source files and music

Ask whether you will receive the project's working files for future edits, and whether the music in the video may be used in advertising.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What you need: a logo animation, an ad video, an explainer video or infographics

  • Where you will show the video: social media, YouTube, a website, a presentation or a screen at an event

  • The desired length and formats: horizontal, vertical or square

  • What you already have: a script, narration text, a vector logo, a brand book, illustrations

  • Two or three examples of animation in a style you like

  • Payment, deadline and whether you need a voice-over and music
