Calligraphy and lettering — find a calligrapher for handwritten work

Custom calligraphy means hand-addressed invitations and envelopes, lettering on a café wall, a hand-lettered logo or a font made from your handwriting. Describe what needs writing and how much, and calligraphers will send responses. Or choose one by portfolio style, prices and client reviews.

How much custom calligraphy costs

What affects the price

  • Number of envelopes and cards

The price is usually set per envelope, card or name, so the total cost depends on quantity. Some calligraphers have a minimum order.

  • Style and complexity of the script

Modern script is quicker to write than classic copperplate with flourishes or blackletter, and gilding is a separate job.

  • Paper, ink and surface

Dark envelopes with white or gold ink, textured paper, wood, mirrors or glass need different materials and more time than a smooth white sheet.

  • Logo or wall lettering

A logo means sketches and vectorizing, while lettering on a wall or window is priced by area, working height and whether it is indoors or outdoors.

  • The font's character set

Cyrillic only or both alphabets, numerals, punctuation and several versions of each letter so the handwriting looks alive — these are different amounts of work.

How to choose a calligrapher

  1. 1

    Cyrillic in the portfolio

Many portfolios are mostly Latin script. Check for samples in Ukrainian: letters like ж, щ, ґ or ї with flourishes take a skill of their own.

  2. 2

    A trial sample

Before a large order, ask for one name or line in the chosen style on your paper, and check whether the sample is paid.

  3. 3

    Spare envelopes and cards

Ink cannot be erased, so a spoiled envelope or card has to be replaced. Ask the calligrapher how many spares to add to the main set.

  4. 4

    Durability of wall lettering

For a wall or window, ask what they will write with: chalk marker washes off easily, while exterior paint lasts a long time. It matters if you plan to change the lettering.

  5. 5

    Files and usage rights

Check that you will get the logo as a vector, not just a scan or photo, and the font as an installable file. Also ask whether you can use them in advertising and on products.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What you need: addressing envelopes and cards, a lettered logo, wall lettering or a handwritten font

  • How many envelopes, cards or names, and the approximate length of each text

  • Script style and alphabet: classic copperplate, modern calligraphy, Cyrillic or Latin

  • What to write on: whether you already have paper and envelopes, the ink color; for a wall — its size and whether it is indoors or outdoors

  • Format: the calligrapher works at their own place, comes on site or works online

  • Payment and the day by which everything must be ready
