Heavy equipment with an operator — excavator, crane truck, mobile crane

To dig a trench or foundation pit, unload slabs with a crane truck or lift loads onto a roof, people rent heavy equipment with an operator. Not sure which machine you need? Describe the job and site in an order, and operators will reply. If you know, compare by prices, photos and reviews.

How much heavy equipment rental costs

What affects the price

  • A machine for the job

A mini excavator for a tight yard, a backhoe loader and a full-size excavator each have a different hourly price.

  • Minimum hours

Equipment owners often charge for at least a few hours, so even a short job is billed at that minimum.

  • Getting to the site

The machine's trip to the site and back is often charged separately — by the hour or by the kilometer, especially out of town.

  • Soil and attachments

Clay, rocks or an old foundation slow the work down, and a hydraulic breaker, an auger or a grab may cost extra.

  • Load weight and boom reach

The heavier the load and the farther it has to go — over a fence or onto a roof — the more powerful the crane or crane truck you need.

How to choose heavy equipment with an operator

  1. 1

    Whether the machine will fit

Compare the machine's size with the width of your gate and driveway. Ask whether there is room to park and turn, and whether it will crack your paving.

  2. 2

    Reach and lifting capacity

For a crane or a crane truck, what matters is not only the weight of the load but how far it has to go: the longer the boom's reach, the less it lifts.

  3. 3

    Who rigs the load

Ask whether a rigger comes with the crane or your own people will have to hook the load, and whether the operator has the right slings.

  4. 4

    Idle time

Agree in advance whether you pay for hours when the machine stands waiting — for a dump truck, concrete or a clear driveway — and whether the drive from the base counts as working time.

  5. 5

    Similar sites in the portfolio

A foundation pit next to a neighbor's house and a septic tank pit at a country house are different jobs. Look for photos of similar sites in the operator's portfolio.

What to put in the order

The more precise the description, the more precise the prices in responses.
  • What needs doing: a trench, a foundation pit, a hole, unloading or lifting a load

  • Dimensions: trench length and depth, pit volume, the load's weight and size

  • Access: what the road is like, gate width, whether there is room for the machine to park

  • What is in the way: overhead wires, trees, walls nearby, pipes or cables underground

  • Whether soil or debris has to be hauled away and whether a dump truck is needed

  • The date you want and roughly how long the work will take
